Women and students from other underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.

The total award of $5,000 can be distributed either:

  1. Over a single academic year ($2,500 in Fall semester 2008, and $2,500 in Spring 2009).
  2. Over two academic years ($2,000 in Fall 2008, $1,000 in Spring 2009, $1,000 in Fall 2009, and $1,000 in Spring 2010).

(The distribution method will be chosen after an offer has been made.)

Eligibility requirements

  • Transferring to UW from a Wyoming community college
  • Accepted for admission at UW and will be registered for UW classes in Fall 2008 (preferably full-time, but at least half-time enrollment in UW classes is required)
  • Declared major (at UW) in a science, mathematics, or engineering field (please note, because we are funded by NASA, some preference may be given to students with majors and interests in areas of significant interest to NASA). A list of preferred majors:
  • Minimum cumulative pre-transfer GPA of 3.0
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Note: Past participation in Space Grant programs or receipt of previous Space Grant awards will not disqualify you from receiving additional Space Grant awards. Continued involvement in Space Grant programs is encouraged.

Summary of Application Process

If you would like to be considered for this scholarship, we will need to receive all of the following application materials from you before the application deadline:

  1. A completed application form
  2. Written Statements:
    1. essay describing your educational and career goals
    2. list of any significant honors, extracurricular activities, and/or work experience
    3. description of economic or other challenges that may affect your academic success (optional)
    4. list of courses currently enrolled in (if it does not appear on your transcript)

The application form and written statements must be submitted by e-mail. Please read the Electronic Submission Instructions for more information about the submission process. Applications will be reviewed by a panel of UW and community college faculty, we hope to make announcements of awards by e-mail before the end of June. Unfortunately we cannot fund all applicants, these awards are competitive, recipients will be selected based on their academic record, personal essays, teacher/counselor recommendations and long-term goals. Students from groups underrepresented in the sciences (including women) are strongly encouraged to apply.

Detailed Description of the Application

Application Form

Download and fill out the application form: Adobe PDF
Please note: you must use Adobe Reader (or Adobe Acrobat) version 7 or higher in order to edit this file and save changes. Adobe Reader is available for free download for both PCs and Macs. If you already have Adobe Reader installed on your computer, verify your version by going to the "Help" tab, then clicking on "About Adobe Reader" (more details on verifying the version, including an example -- please be sure to verify your version before editing this form, for instance, Adobe Reader version 6 may appear to let you fill out some of the form fields, however it will not actually fill them out properly, so when you submit it and we open it in a later version, we won't be able to read it). Please contact us if you are unable to use this file format or have trouble with this form.

Written Statements

Create a single electronic document which contains:

  1. A 1-2 page essay describing your educational and career goals
  2. A list of any significant honors, extracurricular activities, and/or work experience
  3. A description of economic or other challenges that may affect your academic success (optional)
  4. List of your current Spring courses if they do not appear on your school transcripts

Use your favorite word processor to write this document, however, be sure you can ultimately produce one of these file formats: Adobe PDF (preferred), MS Word, or plain ASCII Text (if you are unable to provide one of those formats directly, please read the suggestions for converting files to PDF and if that doesn't help then contact us). Please use the following formatting for your file: 10-12pt Times, Roman, or a similar serif-style font; 1 to 1.5 line spacing; minimum 1-inch margins; and number your pages.
Please note: any files we receive as MS Word or plain text will be converted by us to Adobe PDF before being distributed to the reviewers! We highly recommend that you convert your file to PDF before submitting it so you can insure the final version given to the reviewers looks the way you expect it to. (Suggestions for converting files to PDF)

Transcripts

We need to receive a copy of your community college transcripts. Electronic unofficial transcripts are preferred, and will be accepted if they are e-mailed to us at "wsgc(at)uwyo.edu" directly from your college. If you college cannot send electronic transcripts then paper transcripts are acceptable and should be sent to us directly from your college (preferably by mail - faxed copies should only be used as a last resort since they tend to be difficult to read). Mail hardcopies to:

   Wyoming NASA Space Grant Consortium
   Dept. of Physics and Astronomy
   Dept. 3905
   1000 E. University Avenue
   Laramie, WY 82071

The above address is a P.O. Box and only works for U.S. Postal Service delivery -- use this alternate address if you need to use parcel carriers (like FedEx or UPS).
If your transcripts do not list the Spring courses you are currently enrolled in, then please include a separate list of your current courses at the end of your written statements.

Letter of Recommendation

We will need to receive a letter of recommendation from a science or mathematics teacher, or counselor, who knows you and your academic abilities. Please have your letter writer send their letter directly to us. We would prefer to receive the letter electronically by e-mail to "wsgc(at)uwyo.edu" (as either text in the message body, or as an attached PDF or MS Word file). If your writer is unable to submit a letter by e-mail, then they can mail a hardcopy to:

   Wyoming NASA Space Grant Consortium
   Dept. of Physics and Astronomy
   Dept. 3905
   1000 E. University Avenue
   Laramie, WY 82071

(Again, that address is a P.O. Box and will only work for U.S. Postal Service delivery.)
Here is an information letter that you can give to your letter writer which describes the scholarship you are applying to: PDF, MS Word

Electronic Submission Instructions

All materials must arrive at the Space Grant Office before the application deadline!

  3. Your college will need to send us your transcripts directly to us

If you do not currently have an e-mail account or do not have an e-mail account capable of sending attachments, try setting up a free e-mail account with a provider such as Yahoo!, Gmail, or Hotmail (we are not endorsing these providers, we are merely naming them as a convenience and as possible places to set up a free e-mail account capable of sending attachments).
If it is absolutely impossible for you to e-mail us your application packet, then please contact the Space Grant Office (307-766-2862).
