About our Keynote Speaker

Dr. Dannele Peck is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics at the University of Wyoming. She attended the University of Wyoming and received a B.S. degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Biology and Management in 2000, and an M.S. degree in Agricultural and Applied Economics in 2002. She then went on to receive a Ph.D. in Agricultural and Resource Economics from Oregon State University in 2006.

Dr. Peck's research focuses on economics of agriculture and the environment. As an undergraduate researcher in the University of Wyoming McNair Scholars Program (a program that helps first generation and/or minority students prepare for graduate school), Dannele documented the dependence of many Laramie Basin wetlands on flood irrigated agriculture. For her M.S. degree, Dannele analyzed the tradeoffs of a proposal to purchase water rights from agriculture (and irrigation-dependent wetlands) to enhance instream flow in the Platte River for endangered species conservation.  Dannele’s doctoral dissertation examined the decision problem that crop producers in eastern Oregon face when preparing for the possibility of prolonged drought. Her current research focuses on the economics of wildlife and livestock interactions, such as disease transmission, predation, and the provision of wildlife habitat.

Dr. Peck's interest in agriculture and the environment stems from the years spent on her family's dairy farm in central New York.  Dannele says that as a farm kid she was immersed in math and science on a daily basis. From calculating the correct amount of food and medicine for calves, to understanding tractor engines and hydraulic systems, math and science were everywhere. Math and science continue to play an important role in her life, particularly in her economics research and teaching.

Support WIS

We are seeking businesses, agencies, and civic organizations to help support our WIS conference. Support could be provided in a variety of forms. For example, funding could be used to deter travel, lodging, and per diem expenses for our speakers and attending students traveling large distances. Another possibility would be scholarships or Savings Bonds for students, merchandise which could be given as door prizes, or helping with a brown bag lunch for the students, speakers, and volunteers.

If you would like to support the Women in Science Conference, please contact the Wyoming NASA Space Grant Office.
